I recently had the pleasure of hosting a workshop called The Art of Healthy Living. The attendees enjoyed trying several healthy recipes, but I believe the most fun was had during the blind taste tests. The homemade green smoothie beat an organic store-bought green smoothie hands down. Every attendee voted in its’ favor and for good reason. Let’s look at the differences. Reading food labels is crucial to your and your family’s good health. Here is an example of a store-bought green smoothie food label:
1) Always remember that the ingredients used most are always listed first on a food label and the least used are listed last. Do you see the problem with this green smoothie? 2) Look at all that sugar! Instead of using fresh or frozen organic fruit, they have opted for juices and purées made from concentrate. 3) Fresh vegetables and fruit add fiber and fiber is always your friend.
4) All the good stuff is at the bottom of the list! 5) When opened, store-bought smoothies will last up to 4 months in the refrigerator. When making your own, you are using fresh ingredients which means more nutrients.
Take a look at the green smoothie I prepared for my guests and you will see the difference.
I hope you’ll try making this smoothie and let me know what you think. It is quick and easy to make and tastes delicious! Your body will love you for it.
Would love to hear from you! What is your favorite type of smoothie to make?
Until next time….
Be well!
